Why not just Siri or ChatGPT?

Built for the car — and it remembers

Behind the wheel, Kiwi does one thing well: it answers by voice and keeps the drive on your iPhone. The alternatives are real now — Siri still bows out the moment you need it (“I can search for that when you've finished driving”), and ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Grok just reached CarPlay and are genuinely good. Here's the honest comparison.

How Kiwi compares with ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Grok on Apple CarPlay. Yes, limited, or no for each capability.

yes · ~ limited · no. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Grok are capable CarPlay assistants — the middle band is real, shared ground. None of the four gets a wake word (Apple allows it for none) and all answer hands-free once you start them. Where the others keep your chats in a cloud account, Kiwi keeps your notes and history on your iPhone. Reflects each app's CarPlay behaviour as of June 2026.

Five things built for the drive — the rest is shared ground.

What you can do

A copilot for the way you actually drive

Tap it, or say it

Four buttons on the CarPlay screen — or four phrases

On the CarPlay display, tap the one you want. Driving and would rather not look down? Press the wheel's voice button and say the phrase instead — same four actions, hands on the wheel.

Ask & answer

Ask anything. Keep driving.

A real answer on the first try, by voice, without grabbing your phone. No “finish driving first.” No timeout. Just the answer, then back to the road.

Memory

Clear your head while driving.

Some of your best thinking happens behind the wheel — and then it's gone. Say “Kiwi Memory” and the thought is saved as a voice note before the road takes it, waiting on your iPhone when you park.

Live web search

Ask about something current and Kiwi can pull in fresh answers from the web — not just what the model already knew.

Thinking Mode

Switch it on when an answer needs more care — Kiwi reasons through a deeper answer and shows just enough of its thinking in CarPlay.

Two languages, one drive

Turn-by-turn translation between you and the person beside you — 16 quick-pick languages, or just say any other.

On your iPhone

When you park, it's all there to read

New questions happen by voice while you drive. The iPhone app is the other half — where the drive's questions, answers, and voice notes are waiting to read in full, share, or tidy up at your own pace.

Read the whole answer

CarPlay keeps it short and spoken. Back on your iPhone, every answer is there in full — formatted and easy to scroll through.

Your voice notes, kept

Private by design

Short, intentional turns — not an always-on mic

Kiwi is a focused tool, not a wrapper that's always listening. You start each turn, it does one thing well, and what you said stays yours.

You start it

Nothing happens until you say “Kiwi.” No background listening, no surprise sessions.

Kept on your iPhone

Your conversations and memories live on your device, ready when you park.

Built for driving

Designed for short voice turns in the car — and if the signal drops in a tunnel, Kiwi quietly retries instead of making you ask again.

The proof, not just the promise: Kiwi's backend keeps request metadata only — never your prompt or answer text. Conversations and voice notes stay on your iPhone, and live translations are never saved at all.

Who it's for

For the moment, not the demographic

The idea-catcher

“That's when my brain throws out ideas.”

You think best behind the wheel — and watch the idea vanish before you can do anything about it. Kiwi catches it by voice and hands it back when you park.

The done-with-Siri commuter

Reliable answers, every drive

You gave up on Siri for anything real years ago. Kiwi is the assistant that actually answers in the car — hands on the wheel, first try.

Questions

Good to know

Does Kiwi replace Siri?
No — Kiwi works with Siri. You start it by saying “Kiwi,” and Siri opens the right flow. Your hands stay on the wheel.
Is it always listening?
No. Kiwi takes short, intentional turns — you start each one. There's no always-on microphone; Kiwi only listens during a turn you've started.
Where do my notes and conversations go?
They stay on your iPhone, ready when you park. Questions, notes, and answers from a drive are kept together in one place. (Live translations aren't saved — they happen in the moment.)
Do I have to look at the screen?
No — Kiwi is voice-first and built for CarPlay. Thinking Mode shows just enough to know it's working, without burying you in text while you drive.
Can I tap, or is it voice only?
Both. In CarPlay you can tap Ask, Memory, or Translate right on the screen, or use the “Kiwi” Siri phrases to start hands-free — whichever suits the moment. On your iPhone you tap through everything afterwards: reading the full answer, sharing it, tidying up your history. (Starting a new question, note, or translation is always by voice.)
How is this different from ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Grok on CarPlay?
They're real CarPlay apps now, and they're good. Two differences matter: none of them — Kiwi included — gets a wake word, but Kiwi's Siri phrases drop you straight into what you want (“Kiwi Memory” saves a note on the spot). And where they sync your conversations to a cloud account, Kiwi keeps your notes and history on your iPhone.
What do I need to run it?
An iPhone on iOS 26.4 or later and Apple CarPlay. Your conversations and memories are available on your iPhone after the drive.

Every drive, kept

Your next drive, answered.

Works with the CarPlay you already have — nothing new to install in the car. Ask out loud, and the answer is waiting on your iPhone when you park.
